How long should you breastfeed

How long should you breastfeed

Human breast milk is tailor-made for a baby: it contains just the right amount of protein, carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins to sustain your growing baby. Apart from its nutritional worth, breastfeeding newborn makes sound sense for the following reasons:

  • Breastfed babies are less prone to illness than bottle-fed babies. There are fewer cases of gastroenteritis, chest infection, and measles and this is directly attributable to the antibodies that the baby receives. All newborns receive some antibodies from their mother’s placental blood, via the umbilical cord, but in the case of breastfed babies these are supplemented by antibodies in both the colostrum and in the mother’s milk. In your baby’s first few days of life, they exert a protective influence on the intestine (reducing the likelihood of intestinal disturbance), and because they are also absorbed into the bloodstream, they form part of the body’s protection against infections. Some antibodies, such as those against poliomyelitis, are in the breast-milk, so the mother can actively protect her newborn while he is breastfeeding. (The baby will still have to be immunized himself, however.)

  • Breast milk is more easily, and quickly, digested than cow’s milk. Breastfed babies don’t get constipated: they may pass stools infrequently, but this is because the food is so efficiently and effectively used up. The stools of breastfed babies are soft and comparatively odourless, and they don’t contain the bacteria that generally causes ammonia dermatitis, so these infants are less prone to nappy rash.

  • Breastfed babies rarely become overweight. Each baby has his own appetite and metabolic rate– it won’t be the same as the baby next door, so don’t worry if your baby is fatter or thinner than your neighbour. He’ll be the right weight for his own body.

  • The breastfeeding newborn is convenient. The milk is always at the accurate temperature, you don’t have to waste your time sterilizing and making up bottles, and you save money by not having to buy all the equipment. Breastfed babies have less wind, sleep longer, posset less and the posset smells less unpleasant.

  • Breastfeeding newborn is good for your figure. Research has shown that most of the fat that is gained in pregnancy is shed if a woman breastfeeds. While breastfeeding a hormone called oxytocinis released and this encourages the uterus to return to its normal size, as well as stimulating the production of milk. Your pelvis returns to normal more quickly and so does your waistline. Contrary to common belief, breastfeeding does not affect the shape or size of your breasts. They may get bigger, smaller, or sag after pregnancy, but changes are not contingent upon breastfeeding; they are due to being pregnant.

  • Breast cancer is rarer in parts of the world where breastfeeding is traditional.Breastfeeding may provide some protection against the disease.

How long are you supposed and how many months to breastfeed: Breastfeeding goals are personal. There is no one right answer for anyone, but there are benchmarks. The AAP recommends that your baby receive breast milk and no other liquids or foods until the age of six months, at which point you may start solid foods if your baby is showing signs of readiness.

How long should you breastfeed at a time: The AAP also recommends breastfeeding for until at least one year of age, and beyond one year if that is what is comfortable for you and your family.

How long is best to breastfeed: The WHO recommends only breastmilk for the first 12 months and then continued breastfeeding with supplemental food until 24 months. This is because of the great benefits for the health of the baby.

When should you stop breastfeeding

Both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Canadian Paediatric Society recommend that babies be exclusively breast-fed for six months, and breast-fed even after solid foods have been introduced, for as long as mother and baby are willing . While your baby is mastering the mechanics of eating solids and getting used to all those new tastes and textures, breast milk will continue to be the mainstay of her diet.

You might also have a personal goal that might have nothing to do with what medical professionals say about breastfeeding and its benefits. This might be related to something you saw growing up, or a personal experience. For example, if you felt like you were encouraged to wean prematurely in a previous breastfeeding experience, you may want

to choose your original goal. Or perhaps you feel like your previous standards were too high and you want to choose a lower goal to help ensure that you are successful.

How to stop breastfeeding

The easy way to wean is the slow and gradual method. If weaning is not happening as quickly as you would like, or if you are not seeing any signs of your child’s nursing sessions decreasing in frequency or duration, you might take matters into your own hands. The easiest way to start the weaning process is to reduce the number of nursing sessions per day.

To do this, you should identify one nursing session that you would like to drop. Sometimes there is an obvious nursing session that you know your child can easily drop, such as the five-minute session in the afternoon that is not connected to any sleep sessions. Other times, you might not have a time that stands out as a good option, and you just have to choose the best one. Remove the same nursing session at the same time every day. This will allow your milk supply to adjust. By allowing your body to adjust to dropping one feeding at a time, you can help to prevent problems that can occur with sudden weaning, such as blocked ducts or mastitis. You will want to wait three or four days before removing another feeding. Or perhaps removing just one feeding is where you are ready to stay for now.

The trick is to determine what to do in place of the nursing session you remove. If the nursing session was a long, nutritive session, a snack is in order. Sometimes it can be a good idea to offer a snack and then nurse for just a minute or two, instead of the full nursing session. Other times, you might choose to go cold turkey with that session.

If you remove breast milk feedings, ensure that your child is getting enough calories and the appropriate nutrients from replacement foods. Some families choose to replace nursing sessions with cups of either cow’s milk, rice milk, or soy milk for toddlers over the age of one year, whereas other families substitute meals. Cow’s milk is not a requirement for good health. In fact, many children have problems with dairy. If your baby is younger than one year of age, you should check with your pediatrician for what you should substitute in place of the nursing session. There are more options than you might believe.

How Long Will Weaning take?

To determine how long weaning will take, first look at the number of nursing sessions your child has per day. Multiply that number by the four to seven days it will take to reduce each session. So, if your child is currently nursing six times per day, it will probably take between twenty-four and forty-two days to wean (6 × 4 = 24; 6 × 7 = 42), depending on your body and your little one. The best answer is to proceed according to your and your child’s needs. Remember, it might take varying lengths of time to eliminate each session. For example, your child might give up an afternoon session in the three-tofour- day range, but she will probably hold on to a pre-bed nursing session for longer.

Avoid Going Cold Turkey

There are very few reasons to go cold turkey when weaning a child. Doing so can cause you physical pain and discomfort, as well as bring emotional distress for you and your little one. A slower weaning process is usually easier on everyone involved.

ConFidenCe Cue

you and your child should decide when to wean. tell naysayers you are confident in your decision. this can be hard if you are hearing a lot of pressure to wean, particularly from family. sometimes it’s not even what relatives say, but how they act. such judgment is often what leads some women to nurse only at home or in secret. don’t hide! have confidence that you are not alone in nursing a child who is no longer a newborn.

Prevent Breast Problems When Weaning

Sometimes weaning can cause physical problems. The most common physical issues that mothers face during the weaning process are:

  • Plugged ducts

  • Mastitis (breast infection)

  • Pain

  • Engorgement

These symptoms can usually be reduced greatly, or even eradicated, with a slow weaning process. If you start to feel engorgement, this can be a signal that your body is weaning too quickly. Try to slow down a bit and see if your engorgement eases up.

Do not make the mistake of adding a pumping session to relieve pain from engorgement. Pumping and other forms or breast stimulation will only encourage your body to make more milk. Some mothers recommend lining your bra with cabbage leaves at night to help signal your body to dry up your breast milk. There are also some commercial products that claim to be weaning aids. However, there is no good medicinal solution to aid you in drying up your breast milk. Try to wear a tight bra to ease discomfort. You might also try some overthecounter pain relievers.

Your baby might also experience some negative symptoms associated with weaning. The most common physical reaction will be changes in bowel habits. This is frequently a combination of the lesser amount of breast milk and the foods you have substituted for the breast milk. Water and fiber can go a long way toward get a child’s bowels moving.

Exercise is also helpful. Occasionally, you might see some food allergies as well. If you notice rashes, a runny nose, or other obvious signs, talk to your pediatrician for advice about dealing with food allergies.

What are best nursing bras

Nursing bras come in several different styles. Your main concern should be how the cup attaches to the base bra. There are a couple of different options. The most common type of nursing bra has a cup that fastens to the strap via hooks, snaps, or clips. You simply unhook the bra cup and it comes down, allowing you to expose your breast for a feeding. These are relatively easy to find and your dominant hand does not seem to matter when using this style of nursing bra.

When trying to decide which type of closure you want, you might be confused. Snaps are probably not as common in this location, but you can find them. Some women find that snaps are a bit too difficult to undo easily, quickly, or quietly. Snaps also have a tendency to quickly become loose, making them open at the most inopportune times.

Some nursing bras have cups that are designed to fold over to expose the breast for nursing. Typically, these bras can also be worn while sleeping. They tend to not be the best choice for women who are large breasted due to the lack of support. Now, with all this talk of functionality, do not think that you have to give up fashion. Plenty of fancy nursing bras are available. They also come in great fabrics, including bamboo, silk, and other luxurious fabrics.

While a nursing bra might scream functional in your mind, this does not mean it has to be uncomfortable or even ugly. In fact, some nursing bras are downright sexy. Anytime you shop for a bra, you have to wade through the “strictly business” bras to get to the luxury or fashionable bras. Why would you think breastfeeding would be any different? Sure, you can’t buy a nursing bra at Victoria’s Secret, but then again Victoria’s Secret does not make a bra with easy-access panels.

best nursing bras
best nursing bras

Other types of bras are available for nursing, such as the hands-free pumping bra. These are specialty bras and most mothers don’t need them. The hands-free pumping bra has two cups in place of the regular cup. Both hook to the base of the bra, but the inner cup has an additional vertical slit through the middle of the cup. This is where you will place the horn of the breast pump, and then hook the bra cup to the base. Attach the pump to the outside of the horn and you can then pump without your hands.(see HANDS FREE PUMPING BRA)

Washing your bras should not be a problem. Be sure to check the care instructions before purchasing a bra to ensure that you can handle the care that it requires. Most nursing bras are machine washable, though some request that you use the delicate cycle.

Purchase three or four bras with which to begin your postpartum period. This can help to ensure that you always have a clean, dry bra available to wear. You might also wish to add to your bra collection as you figure out what works well for you.

Evenflo Big Kid AMP & Graco Affix Youth: Best Booster Seat For Toddlers

Evenflo Big Kid AMP Booster Car Seat & Graco Affix Youth Booster Seat with Latch System: The Best booster seat for toddlers

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that all children ride in a rear-facing car seat until they are at least two years old because studies have shown that rear-facing kids are more than 500% safer than forward facing children. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends that 1-3-year-olds ride rear facing if they have not yet outgrown their convertible car seat in the rear-facing position.

You need a kids booster seat with an adjustable back that you can remove when your child gets older. The booster seats for children uses the regular seatbelt but puts it safely in the proper place for your child. It is a seat that sits up high to help the baby sit at table level or window sight level in the back seat of your car. Additionally, it has all the safety belts as the traditional car seat. The bottom part you use until your child is about 8, the law in my state is eight anyway. Longer if you have a small child, but that is not your reality.

Tip for best child safety Booster Seat For Toddlers

Children car seat should be in a 5 point harness until they can sit up properly 100% of the time, including sleeping. Kids should be in a high backed booster until their heads can be supported by the vehicle’s headrest (minimum if I remember correctly). They should then be in a booster seat until the child can sit in the car with the lap and shoulder belts in the proper positions, also until they can sit with their backs straight against the back of the seat and their knees bent at the edge of the seat.

Graco Affix Youth Booster Seat reviews

Graco Affix Youth Booster Seat with Latch System
Graco Affix Youth Booster Seat For Toddlers

The product arrived promptly. It did not come in any extra packaging save its original box. The box was in relatively good condition. The product instructions were simple to understand and easy to set up. The car seat was so easy to install it took not even 2 minutes to secure and best of all it is very lightweight which makes. The fabric was soft to the touch and comfortable.

The size was just right for its intended purpose fitting well in a mid-size sedan as not being too big or too small. It easy to take in and out of the car for cleaning, works well for a three-year-old who is rather tall. It also lays flat, so it can go to the back of the car and doesn’t bang around when driving. Moreover, compact enough so all the sports gear from Volleyball, basketball, softball, soccer and dance can go in the back.

Graco Affix Youth Booster Seat with Latch System

The side impact safety indicators were a definite plus but did not overly wrap around your kid. The laches secure the seat to the car correctly. It has a high back for protection, and a seat-belt router under the headrest to keep the belt in a safe position across your child’s neck and chest

The tray and cup holder are much easier for the child to reach than the alternatives in the body of the car, so that is nice if you want it. Overall a great booster.

Breastfeeding twins

Breastfeeding twins

Having twins and other multiples is becoming increasingly common. Even better is that there are more mothers of multiples who successfully nurse their babies. Some great role models are available to talk to about breastfeeding more than one baby at a time.

Breastfeeding Twins
Breastfeeding Twins

Myths about breastfeeding twins and Multiples

Plenty of myths circulate about breastfeeding in general. But armed with facts, you should be able to pick apart most myths before they can work on your confidence level. Here are some of the more common myths about breastfeeding multiples:

Breastfeeding Twins
Breastfeeding Twins

• You can’t make enough milk.

• All you will do is feed the babies.

• Bottle feeding is easier when you have more than one baby.(see HOW TO FEED A NEWBORN BABY)

These statements are false! Mothers of multiples make plenty of breast milk for their babies. The key to good milk production is the same as with any singleton: Nurse early and often, and follow cue feeding for all babies when possible.

Feeling like all you do is care for your babies is a normal way to feel with multiples. This statement might appear true, but you also have to change diapers, eat, sleep, and bathe. So while you will spend the bulk of your time caring for your babies, you will spend only a portion of that time feeding the babies. In other words, caring for multiples is a lot of work no matter how you slice it. Breastfeeding will not make or break you.

You might be told that bottle feeding is easier with multiple babies. But the truth is that breastfeeding twins is the perfect lay-down-on-the-job activity. You simply latch on and feed your baby. You can multitask if you choose. But in general, there is nothing to prepare, nothing to wash, and nothing to purchase—times two or more.

Know that there are always people you can talk to about breastfeeding twins. Finding support from other mothers of multiples is a great idea. Also look for a lactation consultant who has worked with mothers of multiples before you.

What Challenges do Multiple Babies Present?

Although the statements in the list in the preceding section are myths, that’s not to say that breastfeeding multiple babies isn’t challenging. Some challenges you might have no control over, such as the gestational age at which they are born. Twins are more likely to be born early and are more likely to require interventions at birth. These are two known factors that can increase the risk of having breastfeeding twins difficulties.

Breastfeeding Twins
Breastfeeding Twins

In some ways, you will need to think of your nursing experience as simply nursing two babies at the same time. It is really not the collective nursing situation that most people think of when they think of breastfeeding twins and other multiples. Even if you have identical twins, they will still have different issues when it comes to nursing. Learning these differences will help you in your quest to breastfeed. An example might be that one baby has an issue with tongue tie, while her twin nurses just fine. You might also see one baby has a different nursing style or pattern than her siblings. This can be challenging when it comes to figuring out when and how to feed your babies. But patience and help will go a long way toward deciphering this pattern.

If prematurity is on the list of things you’re concerned about, you might need more help with breastfeeding twins from your lactation professional. And remember, even slight prematurity can make a big impact on your baby’s nursing abilities. You can overcome these challenges with time and support. Having more than one infant at a time brings other issues as well. You have two hands and how many babies? This means you might have to do some baby rotating in terms of how you feed them and when. For a while, you might need help during feedings to ensure that you can get each baby latched well and nursing (and to help with those issues that come up during a feeding, such as someone needing a diaper change!). As you get past the first weeks, this will become much easier.

Managing Breastfeeding Twins  Feeding Patterns

If you are feeding on demand and both babies prefer opposite schedules, you will have to figure out how to handle this situation. Some mothers choose to allow both babies to maintain whatever schedule they naturally prefer. Others try to gently mold their babies’ schedules closer together. should you Feed together or apart? This is one of the most frequently asked questions when it comes to breastfeeding multiples, and you will probably go back and forth with your answer.

Breastfeeding Twins
Breastfeeding Twins

Some mothers find it easier to nurse one baby at a time. This takes longer to accomplish and might leave you feeling like you do nothing but feed babies all day. It also requires more help, because you simply cannot nurse one baby and care for two or more alone if you really intend to feed. Feeding both babies together, while it offers you the chance to save time, might be harder for a while. Particularly at first, as you are learning your babies’ styles, cues, and patterns, you might not be able to hold and latch both babies adequately. Having someone there to help you can be beneficial, but it might also make things a bit more hectic. And a hectic mom means nervous babies, which in turn means the nursing session is getting off on the wrong foot.

The ideal solution is to nurse sometimes together and sometimes apart. As you and your babies get to know each other, nursing can become simpler. You might find your babies actually help each other to nurse. Twins are often known to pat one another to give comfort. Or if you have one baby who might be having a harder time latching, let the first baby get the flow going, and then suddenly your other baby will be nursing like a pro!
