How to use breast pads
Nursing pads are handy items to have around. They are made from either reusable materials that are just washed and worn again, or of disposable materials. You can use breast pads to line the inside of your nursing bra. This lining helps to prevent breast milk from leaking onto your clothes.
Not every woman who breastfeeds leaks breast milk. And leaking breast milk is not an indicator of how much breast milk you have or do not have, although it is more common for women to leak larger amounts when they have an overactive letdown. Some mothers find they need breast pads for just the first few weeks. Other mothers find they feel more comfortable wearing breast pads the entire time they nurse. Once you have breastfeeding well established, you will know how your body works and whether you need breast pads.
When selecting breast pads, consider the content of the materials. Washable breast pads are particularly green. They are made from various materials such as cotton, wool, or flannel. The initial expense for a box of three pairs of reusable breast pads might be similar to buying a larger box of disposable pads, but they last forever. Disposables
are nice if you need to change your pads frequently, particularly when you are out. Just be sure to find a
brand that works for you.
When you wear breast pads, you will need to change them when they are wet. Sitting in a wet breast pad for long periods of time can lead to fungal infections or sore nipples (see HOW TO PREVENT AND TREAT SORE NIPPLES FOR BREASTFEEDING). This is particularly true of breast pads that are backed in a plastic coating to prevent leaks. Ensure that your pads are absorbable, but breathable. You can find breast pads wherever you buy nursing bras, and at most department stores and drug stores.
