All mothers are anatomically equipped to feed their babies and there is no such thing as mother’s milk that does not suit a newborn: the milk the breasts produce is the baby’s natural food and he will not reject it.


  • There is no such a thing as a mother physically incapable of feeding her baby: the size of your breasts bears no relation to the amount of milk that you can produce although breast enlargement or reduction surgery can affect the ability to breastfeed.

  • Milk is produced in deeply buried glands, not the fatty tissue of the breasts, so don’t worry if your breasts are rather small: they are adequate. The amount of milk that you produce is dependent on how much your baby takes, hence the expression supply and demand. For example, if your baby’s appetite is not very great then your breasts will not produce very much milk because they’re not being stimulated by your newborn to do so. If your baby is a voracious feeder, your breasts will respond and produce more milk. The quantity of milk available for your infant will fluctuate throughout the whole time that you breastfeed, according to how much your baby takes.

  • If your baby is hungry half an hour after being fed, don’t worry. Your breasts will have produced some milk for your baby to feed on, and they’ll soon build up a supply for his new needs. When the need for more feeds slows down the breasts will produce less.

  • A newborn needs 60-100ml (2-3 ½ floz) of milk per 500g (11b) of body weight, so a 3.5kg (71b-11oz) baby will need 400-650ml (14—24floz) daily. Your breasts each produces 40-60ml (11/2—2floz) of milk in three hours so your daily output of 700-1000ml (24—35floz) is ample.

Breastfeeding is a strictly demand-and-supply proposition. Put simply, your baby demands your breast milk and your body supplies it. The more times your baby nurses (demands breast milk) the more available and abundant your milk (supply) will be for him.


This delicate process is true throughout the course of your nursing span. Your breasts will

alter how much milk they make as your baby goes in and out of growth spurts, producing more milk as he needs it. As your baby begins to add solids, your body will slowly decrease the amount of milk it produces.


It is remarkable how well your body can adjust in terms of milk supply once you and your baby have established your nursing relationship. Over time, your body will become more adept at producing milk and responding to your baby’s needs on cue. Eventually, your supply can easily vary on an even daily basis, producing more or less milk as needed, according to your baby’s hunger levels at the moment.


Most women who breast-feed their babies produce enough milk. If you’re worried that you may or may not be producing enough milk for your baby, look for the following clues:


  • Day one: One wet diaper

  • Day two: Two wet diapers

  • Day three: Three wet diapers

  • Day four: Four wet diapers

  • After that point: Five to six wet diapers per day and at least three to four yellowish stools

If you are concerned that your baby may not be getting enough milk, talk to your health care provider. She may suggest bringing your baby in for a checkup so that baby’s latch can be monitored, his weight can be checked, and he can be assessed for overall signs of health and well-being.


Certain types of breast-augmentation or reduction procedures can damage nerves in the breasts and cut the milk ducts, reducing the milk supply.

If you need to build up your milk supply because your baby has been losing weight or not gaining weight adequately, your health care provider will likely recommend that you:


  • breast-feed your baby at least eight times per day and that you offer each breast at least once at each feeding and express milk after your baby has finished feeding in order to stimulate your breasts to produce more milk

  • focus on improving your baby’s latch in case he’s not getting very much milk for all the effort he’s putting into nursing

  • keep your baby awake until he has nursed actively for at least 10 minutes at each breast

  • If you’ve had surgery on your breasts, find out the specifics of that surgery. Recent surgical advances have led to better outcomes for women who have gone on to breast-feed their babies. If you can’t provide enough milk on your own, a lactation aid (basically a tube taped to your breast) can allow your baby to receive additional nutrition while breast-feeding.

  • Drugs designed to dry up milk production are not safe and should be avoided.

  • A natural way to help dry up the milk supply is to drink 2 to 3 cups of sage tea per day.

Most toddlers will sleep an average of about 11 hours through the night, and will make up any extra sleep that they need in naps. If your baby needed a lot of sleep in the first year he’ll probably continue to do so เท the second; if he needed little sleep, then this trend will continue, too.


Although he sleeps through the night he’ll still need two naps a day. How long these naps last will depend, as before, on your baby. What may change this year will be the times at which he wants to take the nap. For example, you may find that the nap that he used to take at around 9-9.30 am gets later and later. This means he’ll want to sleep immediately after lunch, at around 30 or 2 pm. On other days, however, he may take a nap late in the morning but then not want another one until the middle of the afternoon.


As far as these changes are concerned, you have to take the lead from your baby; there’s no point in trying to make him sleep to order and you’ll have to accept that the napping pattern varies from day to day. Fit into the baby’s routine so that if he establishes a pattern whereby he gets sleepy towards 11.30 am and wants to have a nap around noon, you start having lunch around 11.30. He’ll then be able to have a satisfying nap after lunch, and you’ll have a much less grumpy baby. Alternatively, you could wait until he wakes up before having lunch – it depends on your baby.

Around the age of 15 months your toddler will reach a period where two naps a day are too many and one nap a day is not quite enough. He’ll happily play through the first nap, but because he can’t last without sleep until the second one he has to have a later nap than usual. This inevitably means that he’s alert enough to go through the usual afternoon one, but then because he’s too tired to last out until bedtime he has to go to bed early. As with everything else in childcare, you have to be flexible. The period where he has to drop one nap will be brief and he’ll soon sort out his own napping routine. By the end of the second year he’ll probably take a single nap at the end of the morning, or in the afternoon.

Until he settles into a napping routine do make sure that he is having adequate rest during the day. Even if he doesn’t seem to be all that tired and is rushing around, eager to learn new games or play with exciting toys, it’s quite easy for him to become over-tired. Keep an eye on your child and if he becomes bad-tempered or fretful, or shows a sudden lack of co-ordination then make sure he rests or plays a quiet game.


Whenever your toddler takes a nap, give him a chance to wake up gently from it. It may be a restorative sleep, but he’s unlikely to wake up perfectly refreshed and active. He’ll need a quarter of an hour or so of being cuddled and talked to gently and quietly before he’s ready to be active again. If you have to go out immediately after your toddler’s nap, make sure that you leave enough time for the recovery of his good humour.

  • Make up a nap time box for your child with favourite toys and books that he can look at as he gets sleepy before a nap. Don’t leave good or expensive books – they may get ripped up. Leave board books or old books. A good alternative is to make up your own books by pasting interesting pictures from magazines on to board and then covering them with clear acetate.

  • Give your child a occasional treat by letting him take a nap in your bed, or somewhere near you.

  • If your child won’t take a nap, make sure that he has a rest time where he is calm and quiet.

  • If your toddler won’t go to sleep, put on a long- playing tape. Teach your child that the rest time is not over until the music stops.

  • Don’t put your child to bed immediately after an exciting game or rough-and-tumble – he will have great difficulty settling down, which will be frustrating for you. Give him 10-15 minutes to quieten down, sitting with you watching TV or looking at a book.

  • Even a small child likes looking at a book in bed so, if your baby is quite happy, leave him with a favourite, non-scary book.

  • Put a dab of your perfume or aftershave on to your child’s pillow and suggest that he breathes it in deeply. Deep breathing is relaxing and calming and will help your child go off to sleep.

  • Give your toddler a bath before bedtime and follow this with a warm drink and a story in bed.

4 cups dry pasta (any variety, but orzo is easy for children to eat)


8 ounces tofu, diced (not silken tofu — it won’t brown)


3 teaspoons olive oil


1 medium zucchini, grated


Salt to taste


  1.  Cook pasta according to package directions. Drain water.

  2. In a medium saucepan, sauté the tofu in the olive oil until the tofu is slightly brown. The tofu will be wet and doesn’t brown easily. Sautéing for 4 to 5 minutes is enough, even if the tofu doesn’t seem to brown up.

  3. Add the zucchini, cover, and steam for 10 minutes or until the zucchini is soft.

  4. Add the pasta, stir, and remove from the heat. Serve warm.

Tip: If the dish seems a bit dry, add a little more olive oil. You can also add a bit of shredded cheese for extra flavor.

2 cups hot water


15 1⁄2 ounces canned kidney beans, drained

  1.  Pour the oil in a large saucepan and add the onion. Sauté the onion until it’s slightly brown. Stir in the water, beans, and bouillon. Bring the mixture to a boil.

  2. Stir in the rice and cover for 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and let stand for 5 minutes. Serve warm.

Vary It! If you want to bump up the protein, add precooked crumbled soy sausage (less spicy than regular sausage) to this recipe after you remove from the heat.

1 cup carrots, peeled and grated

  1.  Mix the veggies in a bowl with the flour.

  2. Form the mixture into 15 round fritters with your hands and place on a clean plate.

  3. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a frying pan and fry the fritters for about 5 minutes (21⁄2 minutes on each side) on medium-high heat until fritters are golden brown on each side. You can cook about three fritters at a time. After 3 batches, add more oil.

Most toddlers will sleep an average of about 11 hours through the night, and will make up any extra sleep that they need in naps. If your baby needed a lot of sleep in the first year he’ll probably continue to do so เท the second; if he needed little sleep, then this trend will continue, too.


Although he sleeps through the night he’ll still need two naps a day. How long these naps last will depend, as before, on your baby. What may change this year will be the times at which he wants to take the nap. For example, you may find that the nap that he used to take at around 9-9.30 am gets later and later. This means he’ll want to sleep immediately after lunch, at around 30 or 2 pm. On other days, however, he may take a nap late in the morning but then not want another one until the middle of the afternoon.


As far as these changes are concerned, you have to take the lead from your baby; there’s no point in trying to make him sleep to order and you’ll have to accept that the napping pattern varies from day to day. Fit into the baby’s routine so that if he establishes a pattern whereby he gets sleepy towards 11.30 am and wants to have a nap around noon, you start having lunch around 11.30. He’ll then be able to have a satisfying nap after lunch, and you’ll have a much less grumpy baby. Alternatively, you could wait until he wakes up before having lunch – it depends on your baby.

Around the age of 15 months your toddler will reach a period where two naps a day are too many and one nap a day is not quite enough. He’ll happily play through the first nap, but because he can’t last without sleep until the second one he has to have a later nap than usual. This inevitably means that he’s alert enough to go through the usual afternoon one, but then because he’s too tired to last out until bedtime he has to go to bed early. As with everything else in childcare, you have to be flexible. The period where he has to drop one nap will be brief and he’ll soon sort out his own napping routine. By the end of the second year he’ll probably take a single nap at the end of the morning, or in the afternoon.

Until he settles into a napping routine do make sure that he is having adequate rest during the day. Even if he doesn’t seem to be all that tired and is rushing around, eager to learn new games or play with exciting toys, it’s quite easy for him to become over-tired. Keep an eye on your child and if he becomes bad-tempered or fretful, or shows a sudden lack of co-ordination then make sure he rests or plays a quiet game.


Whenever your toddler takes a nap, give him a chance to wake up gently from it. It may be a restorative sleep, but he’s unlikely to wake up perfectly refreshed and active. He’ll need a quarter of an hour or so of being cuddled and talked to gently and quietly before he’s ready to be active again. If you have to go out immediately after your toddler’s nap, make sure that you leave enough time for the recovery of his good humour.

  • Make up a nap time box for your child with favourite toys and books that he can look at as he gets sleepy before a nap. Don’t leave good or expensive books – they may get ripped up. Leave board books or old books. A good alternative is to make up your own books by pasting interesting pictures from magazines on to board and then covering them with clear acetate.

  • Give your child a occasional treat by letting him take a nap in your bed, or somewhere near you.

  • If your child won’t take a nap, make sure that he has a rest time where he is calm and quiet.

  • If your toddler won’t go to sleep, put on a long- playing tape. Teach your child that the rest time is not over until the music stops.

  • Don’t put your child to bed immediately after an exciting game or rough-and-tumble – he will have great difficulty settling down, which will be frustrating for you. Give him 10-15 minutes to quieten down, sitting with you watching TV or looking at a book.

  • Even a small child likes looking at a book in bed so, if your baby is quite happy, leave him with a favourite, non-scary book.

  • Put a dab of your perfume or aftershave on to your child’s pillow and suggest that he breathes it in deeply. Deep breathing is relaxing and calming and will help your child go off to sleep.

  • Give your toddler a bath before bedtime and follow this with a warm drink and a story in bed.
