Breast-feeding may be the most natural and convenient way of feeding a baby, but many moms need time to figure out what they are doing. Like any new dance partners, you and your baby need the chance to learn to read one another’s cues and to respond to one another’s rhythms while trying to figure out the basic dance steps at the same time.

During those early weeks a period of round-the-clock marathon feeding sessions when you’re flipping your baby from breast to breast, changing your baby’s diaper, and getting little sleep before you start the whole cycle again you may wonder if breastfeeding will always be this demanding and if your life will always be this chaotic. Fortunately, it won’t. At around the six-week mark, the tide suddenly turns and things are looking up big-time.

Once your baby is happily sucking at your breast, settle down and look at your infant. If your baby’s eyes are open, make eye contact. Smile, talk and chat softly while he is feeding so that he associates the comfort of nursing with the sight of your face, the vibration of your voice and the smell of your skin.

Once you give birth, your body is set to provide your baby with a full supply of breast milk. To make sure your body does its job, you need to have access to your baby. By allowing your baby free access to the breast in these first days and weeks after birth, you will set your body up to establish the best milk supply possible.

Remember, the more a baby sucks at your breast, the more milk your body will make. This

means you need to allow your baby to nurse as often as his cues say that he wants to eat.

How much breastmilk should a newborn eat

Frequently, a newborn will eat eight to twelve times per day in the first weeks—sometimes even more. Keep in mind that these feedings are not necessarily evenly spaced throughout the day. Cluster feeding occurs when your baby seems to take only short breaks away from the breast and then wants to return. This is normal and is not a sign that your baby is not getting enough breast milk.

Babies need frequent feeding because of their body size. Breastfed babies may need more feeds than bottle-fed babies because they digest their milk more quickly. Babies should be fed on demand (see Newborn breastfeeding problems), and parents will quickly learn to recognize the cries that mean their baby is hungry. How long to breastfeed newborn on each side; Infants may need to be fed every two hours, having as many as eight to ten feeds a day. By about one month, babies are usually taking food every three hours, and at two to three months approximately every four hours. However, every baby is different.

Breastfeeding Twins

Most babies sleep through the night after their late evening feed by the time they are three months old, but you shouldn’t even consider trying to drop the night feed unless your baby indicates his willingness by sleeping through.

Your baby’s sucking will be strongest in the first five minutes when he will take 80 per cent of the feed. As a general rule, keep your newborn on the breast for as long as he shows interest in sucking. If your infant continues to suck after your chests have emptied, it may be that he is just using the sensation; this is fine if it’s not making your nipples sore. You’ll find that your baby will lose interest in his own individual way.

It may be that he starts to play with your breast, slipping his mouth on and off the nipple; he may turn away; he may fall asleep. When he appears to have had enough of one breast gently take the baby off your nipple and put him on to the other breast.

If your baby does fall asleep after feeding on both breasts, he’s probably had enough: you’ll soon learn whether this is the case or whether he’s going to wake, hungry again, after ten minutes, or so. Similarly, if your baby appears to have taken all he wants from just one breast, don’t worry. You can start the next feed off on the other breast.

Healthy newborns should be fed approximately 8 to 12 times every 24 hours, usually spending 10 to 15 minutes on each breast. In the first few weeks after birth, it is not recommended for your baby to go longer than four hours without a feeding. Your baby is eating enough during the first four months of her life.

  • 3 days to 4 weeks old: The baby breastfeeds during this time but is receiving colostrum instead of milk. Colostrum is nutritional, and its production is average. After the colostrum passes and the breasts start producing milk, expect your baby to have five to six wet diapers during a 24-hour period.

  • 1 to 2 months old: A typical pattern of eating every few hours starts to form — Typically 10 to 12 feedings every 24 hours.

  • 2 to 4 months old: Your baby continues on a regular eating pattern at This age.
