Nursing bras come in several different styles. Your main concern should be how the cup attaches to the base bra. There are a couple of different options. The most common type of nursing bra has a cup that fastens to the strap via hooks, snaps, or clips. You simply unhook the bra cup and it comes down, allowing you to expose your breast for a feeding. These are relatively easy to find and your dominant hand does not seem to matter when using this style of nursing bra.
When trying to decide which type of closure you want, you might be confused. Snaps are probably not as common in this location, but you can find them. Some women find that snaps are a bit too difficult to undo easily, quickly, or quietly. Snaps also have a tendency to quickly become loose, making them open at the most inopportune times.
Some nursing bras have cups that are designed to fold over to expose the breast for nursing. Typically, these bras can also be worn while sleeping. They tend to not be the best choice for women who are large breasted due to the lack of support. Now, with all this talk of functionality, do not think that you have to give up fashion. Plenty of fancy nursing bras are available. They also come in great fabrics, including bamboo, silk, and other luxurious fabrics.
While a nursing bra might scream functional in your mind, this does not mean it has to be uncomfortable or even ugly. In fact, some nursing bras are downright sexy. Anytime you shop for a bra, you have to wade through the “strictly business” bras to get to the luxury or fashionable bras. Why would you think breastfeeding would be any different? Sure, you can’t buy a nursing bra at Victoria’s Secret, but then again Victoria’s Secret does not make a bra with easy-access panels.
Other types of bras are available for nursing, such as the hands-free pumping bra. These are specialty bras and most mothers don’t need them. The hands-free pumping bra has two cups in place of the regular cup. Both hook to the base of the bra, but the inner cup has an additional vertical slit through the middle of the cup. This is where you will place the horn of the breast pump, and then hook the bra cup to the base. Washing your bras should not be a problem. Be sure to check the care instructions before purchasing a bra to ensure that you can handle the care that it requires. Most nursing bras are machine washable, though some request that you use the delicate cycle.
Purchase three or four bras with which to begin your postpartum period. This can help to ensure that you always have a clean, dry bra available to wear. You might also wish to add to your bra collection as you figure out what works well for you.
